Mothers' Union August 2019

Mothers’ Union Summer Outing

On Thursday 18th July several members and friends of our Mothers’ Union branch visited The Butterfly Garden, Bamfurlong Lane, Cheltenham. The Butterfly Garden is a charity supporting people of all ages dealing with disablement of any kind and we were given an interesting and informative tour of the site by Danny, ably assisted by Alistair.

The Butterfly Garden was launched in 2002 on a four acre site behind Dundry Nursery and Garden Centre by Chris Evans, who runs the garden centre, to offer opportunities to all who might benefit from working in an educational, recreational and therapeutic project.

Initially the project was just about gardening, but now their activities have become very diverse and include woodwork, cookery, drama and dance, all run by a team of dedicated volunteers. They have established a recycling centre, which has proved to be enormously popular. They are one of the very few places in the world that takes in and strips down old video cassettes, recycling all the components.

The Butterfly Garden looks to provide something for everyone and as you wander around the site there is a real sense of purpose about the place and much laughter and yet it is also one of the most peaceful and pleasant places to visit. Their provision is free and currently the project is visited by more than 150 students every week, some of them travelling considerable distances. The younger element come from schools and colleges, with many returning after leaving education and the older students may be referred by family and friends, the NHS, Social Services or other support organisations.

We had a lovely light lunch in Dove’s Café, which is part of the Dundry Nursery, and I would certainly recommend a visit to both the nursery and The Butterfly Garden.

Chris Evans, the founder of The Butterfly Garden, will visit any organisation to talk about the project and he is a wonderfully entertaining and inspirational speaker. Their website is and Chris can be contacted by email on
